The Castillo de San Jose stood up to defend the island of Lanzarote from the attacks of Barbary pirates, now houses the International Museum of Contemporary Art.

Cesar Manrique was responsible for the remodeling work, which respected the internal structure of the building, only adding to the original work, cafe-restaurant.

In December 1976, the Castillo de San Jose was inaugurated as the International Museum of Contemporary Art, obtaining great impact to be the most ambitious exhibition held in Spain since 180 artists attended the event with international recognition.

The museum opened in 1976, with the major exhibition of works by national and international artists, some of which have become part of the Museum's collection.
