Arrecife formed as a city at the beginnings of the nineteenth century, when the capital of the island passed from being Teguise to Arrecife due to the trade in la barrilla and cochineal, and its fishing fleet. In 1908, the first commercial port was built.
In the streets Leon y Castillo and Calle Real, you will find bazaars and shops with electrical goods, watches of all makes and styles, ceramics, tableware, lace, books about Lanzarote, wines from La Geria, cheese, typical products... It is the shopping place par excellence.
Its festivals are the most important as they are the oldest - San Ginés in August involves popular music, sailing competitions, etc.
